Jazz Brings the Best: My Experience at Mendi Art Centre

There are moments in life when you hit that exact intersection where your raw passion meets your actual calling. You realise that music doesn’t just entertain us—it connects us in ways normal conversation could never touch. As the legend Miles Davis famously called it, it is “social music.”

With that exact rhythm beating in my chest, I wrote this. This is my observation of what could be—maku be njani.

It all starts down the value chain in New Brighton. Walking past, I bumped into Boy Lunga, a guy who has known me since I was just a young braita. Not long after, more familiar faces appeared—the people who hold it down and work right there at the Mendi Art Centre. And this was all before I even saw the jazz. That pure pride, my whole reason for attending, was still waiting.

Inside, I met our host, Sis Phumla, the Centre Manager. She greeted me with a warm, genuine smile. Again, note that this was all before the jazz even started. Because of my pure excitement, my stomach started doing jazz rolls of its own—that loud rumbling in the tummy. I caught the unmistakable, mouth-watering aroma in Vuyo’s space. I looked at her and said, “That’s Riza food right there.” She accepted me with absolute grace, working all her culinary magic (check the video attached). Still, not a single note of jazz had played yet.

At this point, I was looking for my partner and co-King, Sebz. He was busy, caught up in interviews. When D-Sebz finally wrapped up, as I pulled him in for a hug, I felt the shift. Out of nowhere, a guitar shouted.

I can’t even fully describe the feeling. In that exact second, while part of me figured I could easily grab a cold can of Black Label, my mind was split between eclives.online barista Star Push and that crying guitar, it happened. Suddenly, I heard a horn. I felt it—or maybe I thought of Miles, or Feya Faku.

Lo and behold, it was my boy. My blood. The only kid holding Gqeberha down with the horn—a brother we’ve written about and featured right here on the platform before.

When you put it all together, that’s what jazz does. It brings everything into focus: the music, the beautiful people, the unmatched vibes, the food, and us, locked in through the sound of jazz.
