I remember hearing the idea of opening a restaurant from Vuyiseka through a mutual friend. It stayed with me. There was something powerful about this young, “Qavi” woman with such big ideas—ideas rooted deeply in the soil of New Brighton, Gqeberha.

I watched her move differently. Not defeated by what she saw growing up in her father’s township, but instead inspired by it. Instead of giving up, she brushed off the dust of doubt, did her research, and chose to build.

I often heard her spirit speaking through her actions:

“Hayi bo… ndingu Vuyi. My father was here—u Sicelo (may his soul rest in peace). If my father made it here, I can too. I am a daughter of the soil.”

And so she decided—not through inheritance, but through her own strength—to open a restaurant in her father’s township. A space built by her own hands, her own vision, and her own resilience.

She often says:

“Ndili Zotsho.”

Not in contradiction to her lineage, but in honour of it. A reminder that she stands on her own, while respecting everything that came before her.

The legacy of her father lives within her, but so does her independence. She carries both with pride. She is shaped by history, but not limited by it.

Her approach to this restaurant reflects that same philosophy—how she cooks, how she treats her staff, how she respects suppliers, and how she builds relationships from the very beginning. Everything is intentional. Everything is rooted in dignity and community.

This journey is also inspired by those who came before us—the Class of 1976, June 16, the young lives whose history still echoes in our present. Though it happened before our time, it continues to resonate deeply, especially here in New Brighton.

It is in that spirit that this restaurant becomes more than just a place to eat. It becomes a place to gather, to remember, to share stories over a meal, and to reflect on where we come from and where we are going.
